Why I love Oral History, writing & storytelling
I remember sitting with my grandmothers (image), looking through photo albums and trying to imagine what each of their lives must have been like (born in 1908 and 1913).
I went on to study New Zealand, Australian and Pacific history at Victoria University, as well as theatre and women's studies. I've always enjoyed writing, acting and telling stories. I've since worked with families preserving stories for future generations, migrants and refugees, Holocaust survivors, activists, various community organisations, and corporate businesses.
I also have over 30 years of working within the NGO sector in areas of online digital storytelling, recorded histories, and legacy mapping projects. I have seen how stories bring to life the communities in which we live.
Oral history enables us to document and chronicle people's stories, which might otherwise not be included in the historical record.
